MINAMOTO YORITOMO: The first shogun of JAPAN, Minamoto overthrew the Taira clan, ushering in the KAMAKURA PERIOD (1185-1333) of JAPAN. For his military successes he received the title of Sei-i tai-shogun, or "barbarian-conquering great military leader." (See also Japan article).
